WHAT CAUSES DECAY? – OPTIMAL DENTAL – DR ROMAN LOHYN – COSMETIC AND GENERAL DENTIST – MELBOURNE – VICTORIA
What causes decay?
Sugar and bacteria are the major causes of decay. The more sugar you eat the greater your chance of developing decay. Optimal Dental places strong emphasis on preventive oral care and is dedicated to helping you achieve a healthy mouth. Located in Melbourne , we will help you maintain your natural teeth for life.
So much of the foods we eat and drink these days contain either natural or processed sugar. Bacteria which settle on teeth thrive on sugar. They love the stuff and multiply themselves so that even more of them can have fun. Unfortunately when sugar and bacteria get together a chemical reaction occurs. This reaction creates an acid which eats away at teeth. The more sugar we eat the more bacteria are formed which creates more acid, dramatically increasing your risk of decay. Once the process of decay has started it accelerates at a rapid rate. After eating through your tooth enamel, decay then attacks the softer dentine part of the tooth. If left untreated decay will engulf the entire tooth structure, eating further down into the pulp.
It is important to limit the amount of sweet foods and drink that we consume and brush our teeth shortly after every meal – including lunch.
If you are concerned about your oral well-being, please ask the team at Optimal Dental at your next dental appointment.
