Holistic Dentist Melbourne

At Optimal Dental we hold a strong awareness of the holistic approach and it is the foundation of everything that we do here. Dr Roman Lohyn recognises and understands the importance of your teeth in relation to your body through many holistic dentistry and alternative treatment focused courses. This form of dental treatment offers alternative procedures using methods, materials and techniques which do not expose our patients to some of the toxic substances associated with more traditional methods.

What is holistic dentistry?

Holistic dentistry, also known as biological dentistry or bio-compatible dentistry, focuses on an overall approach to your oral health and how it relates to your general health. In order to sustain or find your general well-being, holistic dentistry aspires to create a harmonious environment within the mouth.

A holistic dentist works according to the assumption that your teeth are an integral part of your body and play as important a role as any of your other organs. Holistic dentistry aims to treat the underlying cause of your dental problems while working in complete unison with the rest of your body.

How does holistic dentistry differ from general dentistry?

A certified holistic dentist is also trained in general dentistry and will offer most, if not all, of the same treatments that a general dentist will, but he or she will take into consideration a range of additional factors in the administration of that treatment. These include physical, environmental, nutritional, social, and spiritual values and influences. Holistic dentists may also employ or recommend additional therapies such as acupuncture, homeopathy or naturotherapy.

There are a few areas where holistic dentistry differs from general dentistry, where the main area of difference lies in the use of mercury or amalgam fillings. Holistic dentists do not use any fillings that contain mercury as the toxins contained in the fillings can slowly leak into your mouth and body thus causing changes to your overall health. This philosophy is our main focus here at Optimal Dental as we are a mercury free dental practice.

What holistic dental treatments are available?

Holistic dentistry provides many of the same treatments as a general dentist, including treating gum disease, preventative care, cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening, dental implants, teeth cleaning, among others. The philosophical approach to the procedure may be different as a holistic dentist will treat any dental issues in the context of your overall health and wellbeing. There are a number of specific holistic treatments available including the following:

Removal of any amalgam or mercury-based fillings - Dental amalgam is the most common material used for fillings over the last 160 years and contains mercury. Mercury has been shown to be highly toxic and a large number of research articles have questioned the use of amalgam fillings. A holistic dentist will remove such fillings in order to replace them with a biocompatible material. The most common biocompatible materials are composite resin or ceramic restorations, which do not negatively impact on normal bodily functions.

Sleep and breathing assessments and treatments - Improper breathing can impact how the upper and lower jaws develop, how well your body filters inhaled air and your overall posture. Holistic breathing treatments are aimed at re-training your breathing to develop a regular, healthy pattern of 10-12 breaths per minute. It can help to improve your sleep quality, reduce snoring, increase energy and stamina and control anxiety and panic attacks. In children the treatment can also make correcting misaligned teeth a more stable process as well as helping to reduce ear, nose and throat infections.

Migraines and headaches due to improper breathing - Other causes can include the way your teeth are aligned, clenching or grinding your teeth when you sleep or imbalanced neck and jaw muscles. Holistic dentists provide treatment solutions that address the underlying causes of headaches in order to alleviate or completely eliminate the symptoms.

Halitosis treatment - more commonly known as bad breath, is another condition commonly treated by holistic dentists. Bad breath can occur for a variety of different reasons, including the presence of oral bacteria, poor hygiene, smoking or an underlying medical condition. A holistic dentist will work to identify and treat the cause of bad breath.
